Signals and its Types

 Signals, Analog & Digital Signals

What is Signal ?

Signal is define as a physical quantity, which contains some information & which is a function of one or more independent variable.

Types of signals:

1) Analog Signals

Analog Signal is define as the signal having infinite number of continuous values. They are un-interrupted signals which provides information that varies with time. In other word one variable is Analogous (similar) to other that's why it is called as Analog Signals
  • It is denoted by sin waves as shown in figure below
  • Analog signal uses a continuous range of values that help you to represent information
  • It uses a continuous range of values that help you to represent information.
  • Signal bandwidth is low
Analog Signals

Examples of Analog Signal : We use analog signals in wide range of  various appliances & application such as

  • Temperature sensors
  • FM radio signals
  • Photocells
  • Light sensor
  • Resistive touch screen
  • Sound System for sound amplification
  • Audio Recording & Playback

2) Digital Signals

Digital signals is define as the signal which has only a finite number of distinct values. Digital signals are time separated signals which are generated using digital modulation.
  • Digital signals are time separated signals.
  • It is denoted by square waves as shown in fig. below
  • Digital Signal use discrete 0 & 1 to represent the information.
  • Signal bandwidth is high.

  • Computers
  •  CDs
  • DVDs
these are some examples of Digital signal.
